PODGORICA, Montenegro — A Montenegrin military helicopter crashed on Friday on the outskirts of the capital, injuring two crew members, one seriously.

Montenegro’s air force said the aircraft was on a routine training flight when it crashed in a field southwest of Podgorica.

One of the crew suffered severe brain injuries, while the other was in intensive care, but his injuries were not life threatening, doctors at an emergency hospital said.

“I heard a sound and came out and saw a helicopter trying to land. Then it crashed,” eyewitness Rasim Softic said.

Local people pulled out the two crew members, of whom one was unconscious, before ambulances arrived.

It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the SA341 Gazelle helicopter to go down.

The tiny Balkan state, which is slated to become NATO’s newest member, has a small air force that includes five Gazelle helicopters which were made in former Yugoslavia under a French license.
